Cutting out the middlemen from the process, Up-Up is able to verify its 100% slave-free chocolate through an NGO in Geneva, Switzerland. Calum Haggerty, founder of the company, says the 200-worker farm runs on the core principles of no forced labor and no child labor, facilitating human rights compliance.

The center features a demonstration kitchen, a sensory analysis laboratory, various collaborative spaces and labs for pilot-scale testing across the spectrum of food applications.

  • 16 Nov 2018 --- At this years’ SIAL trade show in Paris, Epi & Co presented their plant-based concepts which are making waves across France. As the demand for plant-based core meal solutions heats up across Europe, Epi & Co, part of the French cooperative group, Tereos, is offering new wheat and chickpea based gourmet specialties made from ingredients that have been sourced locally in France and Germany. Speaking to FoodIngredientsFirst, David Cygler noted that while the company started at the end of 2015, the whole range only came into existence a few months ago. “The idea behind our products was to use wheat and chickpea ingredients to develop meat alternatives, for the growing population of flexitarians in Europe. The range is vegan-friendly, kosher and halal as well,” he says.

  • 06 Nov 2018 --- Mauricio Graber took the helm as new Chr. Hansen CEO on June 1, 2018, having previously served as President of the Flavours Division of Givaudan. Chr. Hansen recently reported its Q4 and full financial earnings. The company announced that it had achieved the overall financial targets set at the beginning of the year and raised its ambitions 9-11 percent organic growth for next year. It is the company’s core business of Cultures & Enzymes, which represents 59 percent of their business that performed the strongest, with bioprotection and probiotics forming key pillars here. FoodIngredientsFirst spoke with Mauricio about the current business environment and new opportunities for microbes.

  • 14 Nov 2017 --- The European dairy industry continues to be facing turbulent times despite the abolition of milk quotas in April 2015. The uncertainty concerning Brexit is only fanning the flames of confusion among the UK’s biggest dairy trading partners, most notably the Republic of Ireland. Ornua exports 60 percent of Irish Dairy products and the €1.75bn dairy cooperative has core markets in the US, UK & Germany and is strongly developing in Africa, China, the Middle East and Saudi Arabia. FoodIngredientsFirst spoke to Ornua’s CEO of Ingredients Europe, Bernard Condon. He began by asking Bernard about the current outlook for the dairy market, before discussing why butter prices have been taking such an upwardly march recently and the cooperative’s contingency plans for Brexit.
